“Playground Portrait” – Kim Arnold
October’s POTM was “Playground Portrait” from Kim Arnold. The set subject for this month was Bokeh and Kim achieved a lovely balance between the sharpness of the subject and softness of the background. Kim used her Nikon D80 with 50mm fixed lens, ISO 100, f 1.8 at 1/640, with the white balance set to open shade. The photo was converted to black and white in Photoshop Elements 6 using convert to black and white function with sliders, slight increase in contrast and sharpened.
The September POTM was “Daisies at Napier” taken by Anne Bowman. It was taken in April whilst Anne was walking through the local park in Napier, the Art Deco centre of New Zealand. Anne was drawn to the shapes of the flower heads and used her Nikon D50, aperture priority mode, f5.7, ISO 200, auto white balance, Nikon 18 – 55 lens set at 55mm to capture this great image.
Congratulations to Lisa Enever for her image Far from the Madding Crowd which was selected by our guest judge Martin Reagan for PI of the month. Lisa shot this image at the The Rocks Aroma Coffee Festival. The people looked down on huge crowds jostling for position to watch street performers and waiting in endless queues for coffee. She used her Canon EOS 400D Digital with settings of 0.003 sec (1/400) on aperture f/2.8. Well done Lisa!
Our first Projected images competition was launched on July 2nd with 49 entries. The judge was Chris Senior from Tomerong who provided a detailed critique of the images ensuring that we all learned a great deal from the night. Congratulations to a new member, Steve Selby, who won the Bi-Monthly Projected Image Award with Arc de Triomphe. A combination of nine shots taken at Killalea Reserve, these were the first images Steve had taken when his new camera was just out of the box. We look forward to some strong interest in this new competition.
The June photo of the month was Lorraine Tibbitt’s “Hoi An Fisherman”. The shot was taken on Lorraine’s last trip to Vietnam with Malcolm Fackender’s Spotlight on Asia tour. It was taken with a Panasonic Lumix DCM-FZ5. The great colours are as they were shot, with just some minor cropping from the original.
May’s photo of the month was Jo Pattison’s “A Darker Side”. The judge was very impressed with this strong image, with just the face and neck without a background, as well as the tone and texture of the face. The print version shows just hint of dark detail on the left side of the face, which may not be visible on a computer screen. Jo used her flash off the camera to create the strong sidelight.
April’s photo of the month was Geraldine Lefoe’s ” Never Too Old”. Geraldine was at Cronulla pool at dawn after attending a friend’s retirement dinner the night before. She was struck with the vibrancy of the woman’s bathers and cap. Despite a freezing morning she didn’t hesitate to get straight in the water. A great reminder that retirement is a new beginning and that you’re “Never too old”. Taken with a Nikon D300 and 18-200mm zoom using a tripod.
Kiama-Shellharbour Camera Club’s third competition of the year saw the largest number of entries for awhile, especially Small Prints from our new members. The open competition judged by our guest judge Gary Riley (FCC committee and member of several camera clubs including Cronulla Sharks and Port Hacking), was impressed by the extraordinary range of entries from all grades. He awarded the Photo of the Month to Dulcie Dal Molin, our club president, for her image entitled Morning Walk. The image was taken at Shoalhaven Heads Beach with her Nikon D200 and Nikon 18/200 VR lens. All mounted on her trusty tripod that she likes to call “my best lens”. It belongs to her “maiden voyage collection”, when she and husband, Sev, got as far as Shoalhaven Heads Caravan Park for the first outing in their new van, the same morning as she took “Trotters at Sunrise” her last POTM.

Kiama-Shellharbour Camera Club’s second competition of the year was marked by a strong field, especially Small Prints from our new members. The set subject was Nature and guest judge John Newton from Cronulla Sharks Camera Club was impressed by the range of entries from all grades. He awarded the Photo of the Month to Geraldine Lefoe for her image entitled Lowtide. The photo was taken near Scotts Head on the North Coast of NSW. Geraldine said that dawn photography was always a gamble – you set the alarm and get up very early but you don’t know what you are in for until you get there. However perseverance pays off – eventually!
